Title:  You Are What You Eat

Preached at the "Hour of Power"
Sunday, June 6, 2004, 6:00 p.m.

Scripture:  St. John 6:51-58

51.  I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man
eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will
give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.  52.
The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man
give us his flesh to eat?  53.  Then Jesus said unto them, Verily,
verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man,
and drink his blood, ye have no life in you.  54.  Whoso eateth my
flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise
him up at the last day.  55.  For my flesh is meat indeed, and my
blood is drink indedd.  56.  He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh
my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him.  57.  As the living Father
hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even
he shall live by me.  58.  This is that bread which came down from
heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that
eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

It seems to me that America has a new obsession.  We seem to be
obsessed with counting carbs.  Read that Krispy Kream recorded its
first ever financial loss.  Attributed it to America's counting its
Carbs.  I must admit I don't know what all the fuss is about.  I do
understand the basics that it appears the firsts step to looking
good and feeling great, is understanding your body creates energy by
burning carbohydrates and fat.  With the focus upon your Carb intake
the approach is to limit the amount of Carbs consumed so your body
burns primarily fat. The result is you control your weight, re-
energize yourself and build the foundation for a healthier life.  It
has been suggested that You Are What You Eat.  It has been
recommended that we eat a variety of foods in an effort to be
healthy.  Foods contain combinations of nutrients and other
healthful substances.  No single food can supply all nutrients in
the amounts you need.  For example:
--  Oranges provide Vitamin C but no Vitamin B-12
--  Cheese provides Vitamin B-12 but no Vitamin C
--  Meat, Fish and Poultry are major contributors of Iron - Zinc,
and B Vitamins
--  Animal products are the only sources of Vitamin B-12
--  Milk products contain Vitamin D and  Calcium
--  Certain things we need to understand in our effort to stay
healthy

At the same time we are warned as well that some forms of dieting
can aggravate certain conditions that we may have.  Then there are
some foods that are most likely to affect our moods including:
--  Artificial flavorings and preservatives
--  Chocolate
--  Coffee
--  Eggs
--  Milk products
--  Oranges
--  Sugar
--  Wheat products

Most of us know what we eat, will tell on us later on.  I am
reminded of a Commercial some months ago depicting people wearing
different flavored donuts around their waist line.  If we like to
eat sweets it will show up eventually.  Oftentimes we watch the
sugar intake of our children - too much they begin to bounce off the
walls.  Yes, my brothers and sisters I fully understand the argument
that You Are What You Eat.  This in essence means what we intake,
what we eat will eventually "show-up" on the Outside.  In our text
we are challenged with this same concept.  It seems to me what Jesus
is advocating in the Spiritual realm is the same that we proclaim in
the Natural.  The simulations are worth examination.  Jesus appears
to be echoing the thought – You Are What You Eat.  The Jews who were
there listening to Jesus that day, considered His words as
Foolishness.  Look at Vs. 54  "WHOSO EATETH MY FLESH, AND DRINKETH
MY BLOOD, HATH ETERNAL LIFE; AND I WILL RAISE HIM UP AT THE LAST
DAY."  Remember with me earlier in the chapter Jesus had proclaimed
that he was the Bread of Life.  Because they did not understand, the
Jewish leaders began to complain and murmur among themselves.  You
would think that Jesus would have just left "good enough alone" they
were already complaining and he elects to continue on by suggesting
that we Eat his Flesh and Drink his Blood.  Perhaps they thought
Jesus was Advocating Cannibalism.  What ever they thought they were
not very pleased with Jesus at this point.

Let's take a moment and understand what Jesus was saying.  He had
likened his body to bread.  Jesus therefore, spoke of himself as the
Bread from Heaven and goes on to say unless we eat His flesh, we
will have no life IN Him.  The Jews mindset had traveled back to
Moses and the "MANNA."  Remember that the manna in the wilderness
was given as a substitute for Bread!
--  God filled their Physical need with temporary bread
--  Manna was from heaven but only filled them physically
--  It sustained their earthly life – but sting of death was still
there

Jesus now offers heavenly bread that will no longer satisfy us
Physically but Spiritually.  Jesus understands their concern, and
attempts to help those in his midst to understand his words on a
higher level.  Vs. 57-58  "AS THE LIVING FATHER HATH SENT ME, AND I
LIVE BY THE FATHER: SO HE THAT EATETH ME, EVEN HE SHALL LIVE BY ME.
THIS IS THAT BREAD WHICH CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN: NOT AS YOUR FATHERS
DID EAT MANNA, AND ARE DEAD; HE THAT EATETH OF THIS BREAD SHALL LIVE
FOR EVER."
--  Distinguishes himself from Manna in wilderness
--  Israelites ate that Manna – eventually died in the wilderness
--  Eat of his bread we will live Forever

Jesus was advocating here that You Are What You Eat.  Let's break
this down further, to ensure that no one leaves this evening with
the wrong understanding.  Jesus was not saying that we must
literally eat his Flesh and Drink his blood.  That is what the realm
of Catholicism believes.  That term is called Transubstantiation =
belief that the communion elements are changed into the actual flesh
and blood of Jesus.  Of course, that is not our belief in
Christendom, our belief is that the communion bread and wine are in
remembrance – represent the body and blood of our Savior.  We could
not literally eat of His flesh and drink of His blood even if we
wanted to.  However, what we can do is something much better than
that.  We can --  Embracing the life of Christ and  -  Embrace His
Walk  -  Embrace His Talk  -  Embrace His Lifestyle.  The majority
of the book of John leads us to this conclusion.  ST. JOHN
1:14  "AND THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH, AND DWELT AMONG US…"
--  When we Feed on God's Word – in essence we are also Feeding on
His Flesh
--  Not only do we Feed on the Bible – Also that Still Small Voice

Let me try to close this sermon by shedding some light on what He
meant by "Drink My Blood."  Remember the Jewish people had real
issues as it pertained to Blood.  Even in their sacrifices,
sometimes they were allowed to eat the meat of the animals, but
great care was taken to rid the animal of its blood, this was the
cleansing part of the worship experience.  The blood of the animal
was the means of Atonement for their sin, at the same time – Blood
represents Life  -  DEUTERONOMY 12:23  "ONLY BE SURE THAT THOU EAT
NOT THE BLOOD: FOR THE BLOOD IS THE LIFE; AND THOU MAYEST NOT EAT
THE LIFE WITH THE FLESH."  From the human perspective as well as the
Biblical connotation we understand that Blood is Life. Flesh Without
Blood is Dead!  Following this chain of thought we can understand
what the Jews were experiencing during the sacrificial periods.
They sacrificed animals blood was sprinkled on the sinners, changing
their status and therefore giving them new life.  When Jesus Blood
was shed on Calvary's Cross it changed the Status of all who
believed and conferred on them a new life.  Therefore, we must
understand in the Spiritual, when we Eat of Jesus Flesh and Drink of
His Blood it means that we accept this new life and the standards
that Jesus has set for us.  As we continue to Feed on Him we Become
More Like Him.

--  David found this out in the midst of his calamity.  He found the
more I eat of the Word of God, the stronger I will become in the
Lord.

--  PSALM 34:8  "O TASTE AND SEE THAT THE LORD IS GOOD: BLESSED IS
THE MAN THAT TRUSTETH IN HIM."

--  Paul talked about this in relation to our salvation
and "staying" power

--  HEBREWS 6:4-6  "FOR IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THOSE WHO WERE ONCE
ENLIGHTENED, AND HAVE TASTED OF THE HEAVENLY GIFT, AND WERE MADE
PARTAKERS OF THE HOLY GHOST, AND HAVE TASTED THE GOOD WORD OF GOD,
AND THE POWERS OF THE WORLD TO COME, IF THEY SHALL FALL AWAY, TO
RENEW THEM AGAIN UNTO REPENTANCE; SEEING THEY CRUCIFY TO THEMSELVES
THE SON OF GOD AFRESH, AND PUT HIM TO AN OPEN SHAME."

--  Ezekiel understood this.  Ezekiel found out You Are What You Eat

--  EZEKIEL 3:1-3  "MOREOVER HE SAID UNTO ME, SON OF MAN, EAT THAT
THOU FINDEST, EAT THIS ROLL, AND GO SPEAK UNTO THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL.
SO I OPENED MY MOUTH, AND HE CAUSED ME TO EAT THAT ROLL.  AND HE
SAID UNTO ME, SON OF MAN, CAUSE THY BELLY TO EAT, AND FILL THY
BOWELS WITH THIS ROLL THAT I GIVE THEE. THEN DID I EAT IT; AND IT
WAS IN MY MOUTH AS HONEY FOR SWEETNESS."

--  I stopped by this evening with a simple message – You Are What
You Eat

--  Real  Hunger and Thirst after Righteousness

--  Starve our body of food and water it begins to crave these
elements

--  Spiritual aspect is  the more we Eat of the Word – More we
Hunger and Thirst
